I have to confess i've never really listened to Foo Fighters that much (although 'Everlong' is one of my all time favourite songs), and as i've broken my ankle and not going anywhere i've been listening to quite a bit of new music of late. Included in this is two new songs from the Foo's a new song from R.E.M., and new discoveries from Amplifier and The Pineapple Thief.
'Wasting Light' out on 11th April
'Rope'
This song kicks off with a really textured layering effect which snaps into the main riff really well. Dave Grohl's vocals are delicate but agressive. The song does have a slightly more funky feel but quintessentially it's recognisable as a Foo song. The guitarwork is what really stands out and is most prominent in this song. A 6/10 (only cause it's not as good as 'Everlong')
'White Limo'
This is a real pedal to the metal driving song (sorry about the cliche), the vocals in this are much harsher and the guitars more aggressive, i think this works better. It has similarities in feeling to a QOTSA song e.g. 'feel good hit of the summer' and 'quick and to the pointless' but with a bit more of a rock 'n' roll edge. The video for this is brilliant and see's the band being driven around LA by Lemmy, go check it out on YouTube. 8/10 (cause it's almost as good as 'Everlong') The Foo Fighters play Milton Keynes Bowl on July 2nd - 3rd with support from Biffy Clyro.
R.E.M.'s new album 'Collapse Into Now' out on 7th March 2011
'Uberlin'
Now and again you come across a really great song by complete surprise. That's what i love about R.E.M., their songs do exactly that, no matter what music you listen to. Come on who doesn't like 'Losing My Religion'. 'Uberlin' was another one of those moments where i found a really easy listening and great feel good song, it delivers. Both the vocals and acoustic guitarwork are startlingly sublime, one of the best songs iv'e heard in a while, this will become a classic. 9.5/10
'Amplifier' By Amplifier
'Motorhead'
I recently purchased Amplifier's 'The Octopus' album (review to come at some point) and it's brilliant. This was the first time i listened to them and it led me on to discovering their other albums. 'Motorhead' is the opening track on their self titled album and it's now one of my all time favorites. If you like A Perfect Circle, Tool, Godsmack and a bit of grungey sludge then you'll love it too. The vocals slither over the melody of the guitar parts in between the more distorted riffage, it has an almost ethereal edge to it. 10/10. Amplifier play London 'XOYO' club 15th June and Manchester 'Soundcontrol' 16th June and headline 'The Cave' stage at 2000 Trees Festival 16th July.
'Someone Here Is Missing' By The Pineapple Thief
'Nothing At Best'
Another recent discovery as a recommendation by someone i was talking to about The Cooper Temple Clause. And I can see why he said to check them out, there are strong similarities. A similar gentle echoey vocal style with quiet sections that build into crashing, thundering parts. This song is exactly that with some interwoven electronic bleeps and boops There are also elements of Trent Reznor's solo work with Atticus Ross in this album e.g. 'Wake Up The Dead'. As the bloke in the pub told me 'If you like the temple, you'll like the pineapple' so yeah if that applies to you then check it out. 8.5/10
